Call of the Void: New Work by Merrilee Challiss
Merrilee Challiss’ work is a meditational study. All things going forward must be an elegy for what is lost, a celebration of the future, or both simultaneously. Challiss’ paintings aspire to the middle path, depicting imagined visionary realms. The paintings are failures of attempts to represent energy and consciousness in their various stages. What remains in this world, despite our best efforts to destroy it, is rife with wonder, beauty, fecundity, and meaning. Challiss sees all natural systems; man, animal, and spirit as interconnected. These relationships are persistently overlapping, co-existing on conscious and unconscious levels. Merrilee Challiss locates herself as a human being and an artist, living in the liminal territory between worlds, where the spirit and unconscious trump waking reality.
